Early Field Experiences: Building a Strong Foundation

In middle and secondary programs, baby steps are taken so that scaffold teacher candidates can work positively and professionally in schools beginning in early field experiences. This guidance can begin as long as one to two years before the culminating internship experience. For early field in all programs, we embrace the idea of putting our students in the field immediately—beginning with courses even before admission to teacher education. In these early field experiences, students do not just observe. Much like firefighter candidates attending the fire academy, through classes and coursework, the instructor demonstrates or models proper technique then deems the candidate able to perform their duties to ensure they are ready to go out on scene or out into the schools.
