CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

Steve stepped onto the train at the Wrigley Field station with a horde of other Cubs fans happy about the win. As he moved to an available seat, somebody came up and slapped him on the back.

“Hey, man. Aren’t you the guy from the Kiss Cam?”

“What do you mean?” Steve tried to play dumb.

“Come on. The Kiss Cam. Fourth inning. You and the cute brunette?” The guy looked around. “Did she ditch you? Because she sure looked into that kiss.”

It certainly felt as if Tracey had been into kiss, and Steve couldn’t deny that he was. For a few seconds—was it longer? —they seemed to have recaptured the old passion. Or maybe it never left in the first place. Either way, he felt something and he didn’t think he was the only one. Unfortunately, it was over all too quickly. Tracey broke off the kiss and remarked how stupid the whole thing was.

It was stupid, too. Did anyone actually take the Kiss Cam seriously? Except for the guy standing next to Steve wanting an answer. What, did he want to live vicariously through him the fourth inning kiss captured on the Jumbotron for all to see?

“Sorry, man.” Steve shook his head. “I think you have me confused with someone else.”

“If you say so.” The guy’s shoulders slumped, as if disappointed that he hadn’t met a Kiss Cam celebrity after all. “Too bad.” He ambled down the aisle to another seat.

Steve took out his phone and angrily tapped in Brian’s number.

“Hey, great game, huh?” Tracey’s brother asked cheerfully.

“Yes, it was,” Steve agreed. “I’m surprised you settled for watching it on TV when you could have been there in person.”

Brian laughed. “You know me. Anything for a good cause.”

His flippant tone gave Steve all the confirmation he needed that Brian set the whole thing up to get him to the game with Tracey. “Good cause? Yeah, tell that to your sister. I think she’s pretty pissed at you right now.”

“That’s nothing new the past few weeks,” Brian said, his tone still nonchalant. “Are you mad at me, too? Are you really going to tell me you had a miserable time at the game with Tracey and Lindsay and you would’ve rather stayed home and watched it on TV while listening to Meredith complain about how boring baseball is?”

Steve didn’t respond right away. Brian’s comment hit a little close to home. That was exactly how the evening would have gone, that is if Meredith even let him watch the game in the first place. The far more likely scenario would be opting not to watch the game in order to keep the peace and not have to listen to further complaining.

He seemed to do that a lot lately, much like how he gave up the season tickets in the first place because Meredith had no interest in the sport. He certainly couldn’t deny that it felt good to attend a game again, especially with someone who shared his interest. “That’s a low blow,” he finally said.
