Chapter Fifteen:
The day dawned cloudy with a slight drizzle and Detective Jones knew at the start that it was going to be a bad day. His coffee was already cold and he didn’t even have a chance to finish half of it before being inundated with work issues. He sat back in his chair and decided to take a moment to listen to his voicemails, and then he was going to go get a fresh cup of coffee and try again. The messages were the same useless calls until one came up from Gabby Kincaid. He listened carefully and jotted down a few notes. It seemed she might have come across a clue as to the identity of the thief from the gallery, but did not give any information on where she had gotten the clue from. She also left a description and license plate number for a car that was owned by the thief. Detective Jones thought it was rather odd, but on a hunch, he decided to punch the information into his computer to see who turned up owning this car and where he was from. As the information populated, he got up to freshen his coffee. When he sat back down to review the information, he was somewhat stunned at what he saw. The license plate and car belonged to none other than Wes Logan, Laguna Beach’s newest little rich kid and all around playboy. The match as a thief that stole an inexpensive painting from an unknown artist at a local gallery just didn’t mesh. The kid had more money than he could possibly spend in a lifetime, why would he risk being arrested for stealing a painting that he probably could have cleared out his change drawer at home to buy? He jotted down a few more notes and decided to take a drive out to Laguna Canyon to pay Gabby Kincaid a visit.
He pulled into the driveway and made his way to the front door. Before he had a chance to knock, Gabby opened the door. “Hi Detective Jones, I saw you drive up. Come on in and make yourself at home. Would you like some coffee or something cold to drink?”
“Coffee would be great, ma’am, if it is not too much trouble. I never got around to drinking mine at the office.”
“No problem, have a seat and I will be right back with some.”
Gabby returned a few minutes later with the coffee and sat down on the chair across from the Detective. “What can I do for you today, sir? I assume this visit is about the voicemail I left for you?”
“Yes it is. I was able to run those plates as you requested, but I have a few questions to ask before we can continue to discuss that further.”
Here was the moment Gabby was dreading. How was she going to come up with a plausible story to account for knowing that Wes was the thief without involving Jacob and the crazy story
