Chapter 9

Lisbon
Lucy had chosen a table in the open courtyard off the side of the hotel. On it sheâd spread her laptop, phone, a notepad, two pens, and her AirPods, which she had handy in case a call came in about her mother. She and Sharon had agreed to do their own things for the afternoon so that Lucy could work on the details of their new life circumstances while still being available to anyone from the tour group who might need her, and Sharon had been more than happy to take an afternoon nap and have a pre-dinner drink at the rooftop bar.
Selling her momâs house in Buffalo was a necessity, though it was charged with emotion. That was the house Lucy had grown up inâthe house that had been both home and prison to her mother all these yearsâand letting it go was a final but necessary goodbye to her hometown. Lucy pulled up the Facebook profile of a high school friend who was doing real estate now and sent a quick message. When she was done with that, she ran a quick search of in-home caregivers on Amelia Island and jotted down a few phone numbers. âHello?â
âLucyâhi.â It was Nick. She dropped her pen and sat up straighter.
âNick.â Lucyâs heart started to beat faster. Since leaving Fiji, theyâd spoken, of course, but things had been weird. When they first got back, heâd avoided her as much as possible and sheâd avoided both Nick and Dev, bringing her own thermos of coffee from home as a way to skip going into Beans & Sand, and while sheâd desperately wanted to go next door to The Carrier Pigeon to chat with Nick midday, sheâd held herself back and let a little time pass.
Eventually, theyâd gotten to the point where they said hello in the parking lot, then chatted briefly if they found themselves face to face, but it had been nearly two months since Nick had called, texted, or given Lucy any indication that he might eventually forgive her for deciding in Fiji that she wasnât in a good place yet emotionally to fully commit to their budding relationship. There had been many times when sheâd wanted to race out of her office and blow through the door of his shop to explain to his face that it had nothing to do with Devâhaving both of them on Fiji had
