Jimmy, you have to come home.

It was after midnight in Salisbury, on a late April night. I had gotten used to nocturnal silence during my family’s stay with Bonnie and Tessa. I was in the middle of reading Virginia Wolff’s To the Lighthouse when the telepathic message arrived. It had been so long since I heard Bobbi Angelini in my head, I did a mental double take.

What?

You need to come home. All of you. Bobbi repeated.

Is something wrong? I asked.

I don’t know. She responded. But Spirit says something big is going to happen and it must happen here. At your home. With the family.

Bobbi had been my Berthoud family psychic-medium-witch since I was first introduced to her and her partner, Helen LaLousis, by Lenny when Gina and I first arrived in Colorado under the auspices of the federal government Witness Protection Program. Since that time, Bobbi had repeatedly demonstrated that she was the real deal and that you ignored her prognostications at your peril. Unlike her mediumship abilities, which provided clear communications from beyond the veil of specific facts and information, her predictions for the future, often provided to her by her Spirit Guide, were sometimes general. As she once explained to me, the future was malleable and prone to change by the decisions you made after the prediction. Her Spirit Guide had told her that one of our group was going to die the night of the Storm before a mafia hit team arrived at my home and put a bullet through my heart. And the Spirit Guide also predicted that I would not stay together with Gina, back when she was resolutely remaining in her human form. Once Michelle genetically converted Gina from a human to a Centauri hybrid like me, the future changed along with us.

But this was different. This was specific. I could not ignore it. I had to trust Bobbi for the good of my family.

Okay, I responded. We’re coming home.
