Chapter Ten
Living the dream
By the time they boarded the ferry to Calais later that night, bleary-eyed and exhausted, Reiko almost wished minion number two would show up. The higher-level minion who would bring a whole new level of jeopardy. The journey to Paris so far had been so dull, her head felt thick with cotton batting, and at least fleeing for their lives on an adrenaline cocktail would break up the monotony.
The boat was nice enough. Lots of stained wood and windows. Had it been sunny, it would have been very cheerful and provided a great vantage point to see the famous White Cliffs of Dover. As it was, it provided a great view of the drizzly mist and overcast night sky pressing in on them.
“I’d kill for a deck of cards,” Levi grumbled as they commandeered a small sofa in the ferry’s lounge area.
“Tired,” Reiko mumbled. Using her coat as a pillow, she crammed it against the wall, and closed her eyes. Sleep came but it wasn’t the restful, refreshing kind. More a sweaty, thrashing, “I should have powered through with caffeine” catnap.
When she awoke, her neck was massively kinked. Rubbing it, she peered around for Levi but he was nowhere to be found. Neither were their suitcases. Reiko bolted up, her heart hammering. She checked the secret pocket in her pants’ hem with shaky hands, relieved to feel the stones and locket there.
We’re on a ship. He can’t have disappeared. Forcing herself to keep calm, since panic never made a situation better, Reiko methodically searched the boat. She got as far as the top floor before the ship lurched, the water insanely choppy. Another rolling lurch, this time accompanied by an answering squick of her stomach. Reiko ran to the bathroom, barely making it to the toilet before she puked her guts out.
About forty minutes in to her misery, she wished she’d made Levi suffer through his claustrophobia of the Chunnel. At least that would have only lasted twenty minutes. With nothing left to vomit, she rinsed out her mouth about a hundred times, then purchased a pack of ginger Gravol and some breath mints from the sympathetic woman manning the cash register in the onboard shop.
Taking deep breaths was out since the cabin smelled like diesel and burned coffee. Reiko gagged, bolting for one of the outside doors. Bracing herself, she stepped outside into the brisk night air. She gripped the slick railings, gulping down fresh air, until the rough passage calmed down enough for her to get her nausea under control. Though to be on the safe side, she popped another Gravol.
Laughter drifted over to her from the far end of the deck. She peered into the gloom but there were no lights out here and all she saw was two people deep in conversation. She strolled toward them.
Reiko stuffed her cold, stiff, fingers into her pockets against the sharp salty breeze blowing around and through her. As she neared the chatting twosome, she saw two suitcases.
