Therron’s satchel and Tharva’s shoulder bag were exactly where we’d left them when it had all started—outside the castle on the top of the hill. When we got there, the pegasus was gone. I assumed it meant she was still alive and had gone back home to her family.

‘I’ll carry that for you.’ Therron took the blue bag from me before I could hoist it onto my shoulder.

‘Are you sure?’

‘Of course. You’re hurt.’

I looked down at my arm which I supported in front of my chest with my other hand. Every time I let go of it, it would instantly hurt again.

‘Let me have a look at that,’ he offered, holding out his hand. I recoiled, which only elicited a laugh from him.

‘I’m not going to bite!’ he joked. I slowly extended my injured arm, allowing my wrist to rest in Therron’s hand. ‘Now try and wiggle your fingers,’ he said. I tried, but could barely manage a twitch before I was wincing in pain again. ‘Looks like a fracture,’ he conceded.

‘How do you know?’

He quirked an eyebrow. ‘You really think I can hunt for my own food every day without sustaining a few injuries?’ he said. ‘Here, I’m sure Tharva packed something we could use.’ He gave me back my arm and dove into the bag, fumbling around for a few moments before pulling out a length of stretchy, black material. ‘Here,’ he said. ‘I’m not sure what it is, but it should do the trick.’

I looked at what Therron had found, and I couldn’t help myself. I giggled.

‘What?’ he asked, baffled at my reaction. ‘What is it?’

I pointed at the fabric he held in his hands. ‘That,’ I told him, ‘is a pair of women’s tights.’

Therron’s cheeks turned bright red. ‘Oh . . . um . . . I didn’t realise . . .’

‘It’s fine,’ I assured him, trying to control my laughter. ‘Don’t worry, it’ll work.’

Tenderly, Therron threaded the nylon around my arm and behind my neck, creating a perfect sling. I had to admire his handiwork: it didn’t hurt in the slightest. When the job was done, the two of us headed back down the hill to make our way out of the city, ready to resume our quest for the King’s brother. Now that the whole ordeal with the ogre was over, we both felt a little more relaxed about continuing with our journey.

Little did we know, though, our troubles were only just beginning.
