Chapter Ten

I downed the rest of my coffee before I stood up and left a five-dollar bill on the table for the waitress.

“So… if I need your help… how do I get in contact with you?” I asked.

“We’ll always be close by,” Bowers said with an amused smirk. “But… just in case, here’s my card.”

Bowers slid a plain white business card across the table with his thin finger and tapped on it. All it had was a number, nothing else. It was simple and boring, just like him.

“I feel honored, Bowers,” I said as I tucked the card into my pocket. “I feel like it’s not often you give your number out on the first date.”

“Real joker, huh?” he scoffed with a roll of his eyes. “Don’t waste my time, Mark. You only call me if it’s urgent. We can’t risk Gideon getting any word of our involvement.”

“Yeah, yeah, I got you,” I drawled. “Top secret. Like everything else we’re doing, right?”

“What’s your next move?” the agent asked with a sharp look.

“Do I have to tell you everything now?” I joked.

“I believe it will help our mutual efforts to put this bastard in the ground, so yes,” he said flatly. “I think it’s in your best interest to do so.”

“I’ll go back to the Academy and tell Mori everything,” I said with a shrug. “I can’t do this without all of my team. And we’ll need to start planning some way to lure Gideon out.”

“Good.” Bowers nodded once. “On your way then.”

“That’s it?” I laughed. “No kiss goodbye?”

“Just get out of my sight before I regret this,” the agent groaned and put his head in his hands. “This is already killing a little part of me inside.”

“Alright, Bowers,” I said with a chuckle.

I’d had my fun. It had surprisingly improved my mood watching him squirm like that, but I didn’t want to push my luck. After all, he could have just given us the missing piece of the puzzle to finally finish off Gideon.

Plus, I wasn’t currently handcuffed to the table and about to be taken into SIA custody.

“I’ll see you on the battleground, then,” I said as I started to make my way to the exit.

“Hopefully soon,” he said in an eerie tone. “We’ll be watching, Mark.”

“Yep.” I nodded and quickly left the diner.

Not creepy at all.

I fast-walked back to the van as quickly as I could, and as soon as I was back in the driver’s seat, I turned to my expectant teammates with a grin.

“Totally worth it,” I said.

“What did he say?” Hannah asked with an eager smile, and she shuffled closer to me in the passenger seat.

“He thinks Gideon has somehow split his soul in the astral realm,” I paraphrased for the sake of brevity. “He wants me to lure him out and trap him in the astral realm so I can finally finish him off. Piece by piece.”

“You make it sound simple.” Frank spluttered out a laugh.

“But knowing Gideon, it’s not going to be,” I added with a sigh.
