Millie’s low growl woke Caroline from the best sleep she’d had in weeks. It was so deep and dreamless that her eyelids didn’t seem to want to lift. She nearly fell back asleep.

Then Millie added a snarl to her growl and bumped her ear against Caroline’s hand. An alarm went off in the back of Caroline’s mind, sending her heart racing. This time her eyes flew open. Dylan! Where was Dylan? Was he okay?

Disoriented, she fumbled around trying to sit up in her bed, and then she realized she had actually fallen asleep on the sofa in the living room.

“Stay down,” Zane called out in a loud whisper.

They had been watching a movie on TV in the living room. After the last of the friends who’d helped with the yard cleanup left, Caroline had been physically tired. But the unwelcome visit from her former sister-in-law had set her mind buzzing with anxiety and she hadn’t been able to calm it down. Worry over the physical attacks on her, dread that the danger could spill over and harm her family, fear that she really could lose custody of Dylan—all had combined to leave her anxious and jittery.

She’d been determined to hide her increasing concern from her mom and nephew and the wonderful friends, old and new, who’d come over to help. She’d smiled and tried to dismiss Michelle’s reappearance as something she could easily deal with. But Zane had seen through her act. After the last guest had left, he’d asked for a second round of dessert. Caroline, her mom and Dylan had joined him in the kitchen and had enjoyed a few extra bites of coconut cream pie alongside him.

He’d mentioned a cup of coffee would taste good and offered to brew it himself. While sipping some from a mug, he’d suggested that if he took tonight’s guard of the house they could all watch a little TV or chat a bit. He’d sensed that companionship was exactly what Caroline needed.

They’d all sat down in the living room, picked out a silly movie suitable for Dylan to watch and then Caroline, her mom and Zane had talked. After Dylan fell asleep, her mom had said good night and carried him back to her room to put him to bed. Caroline and Zane had kept talking. Nothing heavy, nothing serious. Funny stories about Owen and her dad, mostly. High school memories. A little bit about what each of them had been doing for the last few years.

Slowly, her anxious thoughts had wound down. She must have fallen asleep. And now the dog had woken her up and Zane was urging her to take cover.

She heard the sound of scraping metal from the backyard area, like someone had bumped the patio furniture. Millie started barking furiously and lunged toward the sliding door, which was locked, trying to get her head under the closed curtain so she could see outside.

“Millie! No!” Caroline got up to grab the dog’s collar and pull her away from the window, afraid whoever was out there might take a shot at Millie.
