Talako quietly suggested that someone go to the western and southern cave entrances to check the sky. Brian and Val volunteered, and soon returned with the news that the storm was over. The group returned to the lodge through the pantry, and several of the adults took a look outside. There was minor damage to the vehicles. The windshield of Erin’s Expedition was cracked, and it looked like someone had bounced a hammer all over it, but the dents were mostly superficial. The tanker had similar dents, but after checking it out thoroughly, Mac assured everyone that the fuel was safe. The few tomato plants, the one crop still producing on the deck, were bruised, but Erin had hopes that they would live until the first frost.
Tanner and Ian went as quickly as possible up the mountain, and tried repeatedly to get Ken or Terri on the radio. They heard nothing at first, then thought they heard clicks. Finally, they heard a crackly noise, and what sounded like “help us.”
The two men slid and slipped their way back down the slope to the lodge, and gathered the group in the living room.
“We think they’re in trouble at the church. We could barely hear it, but it sounded like someone calling for help on the channel we use to talk to Ken.” Tanner paused to catch his breath. “I think we better go check on them.”
Erin handed Tanner the keys to the SUV, and he, Ian, Vince, and Brian headed to town. The trip was only about four miles, but took well over an hour because they had to continually stop to drag trees limbs out of their way. In several low places, water rushed across the road, but Tanner drove through it.
“Hey, whatever happened to ‘turn around, don’t drown’?” Ian joked.
“I know these roads like the back of my hand, and this is a big ol’ SUV. We’ll make it,” Tanner assured him.
They finally came out of the woods and could see the damage. The shock of seeing their hometown with a wide path of devastation through it caused several moments of silent staring as they stopped to survey the reality in front of them.
Tanner finally took his foot off the brake and continued down the hill. At the bottom, they had to abandon the Expedition and walk the rest of the way in, due to debris all over the streets. They found the bodies of the two strangers, damaged beyond recognition even if they had known them well. When they got to Lee Street, the damage to the church became visible. The three of them were speechless at the sight of the damage to the building, and hurried over to the pile of stones to check on their friends.
“Ken! Ken! Terri! Are you okay?” Tanner shouted frantically toward the rubble that covered the stairs. The stones were too large for mere men to move, but they tried anyway, scraping skin off their hands as they struggled to remove them.
“Help!” The cry came from beneath the debris, and Tanner shouted back.
