Changes in Teaching and Administrative Staff

Another significant change at institutional level was in the demographics of teaching and administrative staff of the UoN after independence. As one faculty member in the College of Biological and Physical Sciences observed, “there is more of a local, Kenyan ownership of the university than there was then.”7 Since its historical beginning as a colonial university, most of the teaching and administrative positions at the UoN were occupied by expatriates. Shortly after independence, the Kenya government made a deliberate effort at the “Kenyanization” of many of its national institutions, including its first public university. Part of this effort included facilitating the education of Kenyans in Europe and North America as a staff capacity-building endeavor for the UoN. Thus, in addition to having more Kenyan instructors, another visible change at the university is that there are relatively more lecturers with PhDs now than at independence.
