The Market Place in the 1950s, possibly on a Saturday when the market was taking place. The Golden Lion public house was displaying a local Whitwell & Mark sign between the windows over the front door. To the right there is a fish and chip restaurant.

These two ladies are having a gossip in the entrance to the old indoor market hall. I doubt that the bottles on the pavement outside belonged to them. The main market hall, as it is today, was further inside, just off to the right, while the window and doorway at the far end opened out onto the Stricklandgate car park.
