Centrifugation is generally used to separate large things from each other.

For example, you can• centrifuge blood to separate cells (red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets) from plasma;

• centrifuge cell debristo separate out organelles of interest, such as mitochondria;

• centrifuge (at extremely high speeds—called ultracentrifugation) to separate big DNA molecules, such as bacterial chromosomes, from smaller ones, such as plasmids. Large quantities of pure DNA are obtained using this method.
