Brendan is Taken

Peter Tracey looked with disbelief at his father across the table on which lay the remains of an evening meal.

‘I can’t do it,’ he said hollowly.

‘You’ll do as you’re told,’ ordered his father.

‘I can’t!’

‘You haven’t got any choice. The boy saw you. You’ve nothing to lose and everything to gain.’

Peter was trapped. He knew that. He had to go through with his father’s plan or suffer the consequences. He had to face the police or the indescribable dread of the punishment that would be meted out to him by the elemental forces in which he’d been brought up to believe; the ancient faith held by his family for countless generations. But there was another dread that gripped Peter Tracey; a horror he knew he couldn’t live with. ‘What are you going to do with him?’

Tracey thrust a finger across the table at his son. ‘None of your concern.’

‘Yes, it is!’ said Peter passionately. ‘It is!’

‘Don’t think about it!’

‘How can I not think about it?’

‘There’s a greater issue to think about. Greater than him, greater than you, greater than me.’ Tracey’s voice was low, urgent and his eyes alight with fanaticism.

‘He’s only a kid,’ moaned Peter.

‘Remember that! Remember he’s spoiled, privileged, corrupt. That’s what you remember! A thief! A stealer of the soil that is rightfully ours from time immemorial. Remember that and do as you’re told.’

Peter sank back and lowered his eyes, no longer able to bear the heat in his father’s. He had one last desperate hope. Still with downcast eyes he said: ‘If we get caught they’ll put us inside.’

His father stretched his mouth into a knowing smile. ‘You mean you’ll get yourself caught? You’ll be safe inside? You know better than that. You’ll be no safer in prison. Hecate will seek you out… will seek me out… and her revenge will be terrible. You know that. Take heart! Take courage! The Great One spared you last night. Be eternally grateful that She has given you another chance.’

Peter had not lifted his eyes. His face crumpled and he began to sob. Father looked at son without compassion, his bounden duty done.
