I found myself surprisingly content as we toured the little cottage. Not that it was that little. I’d been expecting something like a common room with the basics and one or two bedrooms, along with a small bathroom. Not this place. Compared to the mansion next door it looked small, but it had everything one could ask for. Two large bedrooms, each with their own bath, a large common room much bigger than I’d anticipated, and a sunroom looking out over the ocean. Even a sitting room for me and a small game room/office for Nat.

The tech didn’t surprise me. Jake has always been a bit of a technical guru. I would have called him a tech nerd, but few would risk saying such when they saw his body build and knew he’d been in the Marines. The computer in the sitting room was hidden in a nook, but the one for Nat was much more prominent. It also had a large VR display, something I knew our daughter would put to good use.

What I was surprised to see were the little things like nice curtains in the windows, pretty coordinated towels in the bathrooms, and a vase with real flowers on the little table in the kitchen area. A glance at Cassie told me the truth, because there was no way Jake would have been able to do all those things. Even appropriate linens in the bedrooms, with a conservative bedspread suitable for me and a more modern one in Nat’s room.

“I know Jake didn’t do all this,” I told Cassie with a smile. “He wouldn’t have a clue. I appreciate it a lot. Jake’s tech would be all Nat cares about, but with the other stuff it almost feels like home, which I guess it will be for a little while.”

Cassie just nodded gracefully. “I might have given him some suggestions. You can thank Jacob’s credit card, but I did offer him some slight advice. The place really needed a woman’s touch to make it feel like a home.”

Jake shook his head. “I’ll admit I can take zero credit. I was totally lost, but luckily, with Cassie’s help, it came together. We just got it all brought in a couple of hours ago. I see what she did and appreciate it, but I would have had no idea how to pull it off.”

Nat had gotten sidetracked by the computer in her study room, but nothing could keep her occupied for very long. The rest of us had gathered in the sunroom that looked out over the ocean. “The Wi-Fi screams,” she said, “but that can wait. We’ve got to get down to the beach.”

That raised questions in my mind. I turned to Jake. “Is the beach safe? We’re not the only ones on the island. I saw that much on the flight in.”

Jake nodded. “Quite safe. We’re on the end all by ourselves and the beach is blocked off on both sides by rocks.
