chapter thirty-two

When Andi emerged from the bathroom, she nearly collided with the person in the hallway.

Duke.

She gasped and drew back. Her mind had been in another world, and she hadn’t even realized anyone else was nearby. “Sorry about that.”

“That was my fault,” Duke insisted, his voice deep and soothing—and almost as engaging as Craig Rogers’ had been.

Instead of continuing down the hallway where the scent of bacon and eggs floated, they observed each other a moment. Unspoken conversations lingered between them. He’d clearly just taken a quick shower also—thankfully Simmy had more than one shower in the building for her guests. A soapy scent floated from him, and his hair glistened.

Duke studied her a moment, and Andi refused to look away. Yet she couldn’t help but think that this man could see through her. That he knew Andi had other reasons for being in this area rather than simply working as an ice road trucker.

He shifted and averted his gaze a moment. “Any word on the roads?”

She remembered her conversation with Lockjaw, and her back muscles tightened. “Still closed. I’m going to be stuck here for a while.”

“It sounds like we all are.”

Andi shoved her hands into the pockets of her day-three jeans, wondering why this conversation felt so strange—as if they were casual friends on one hand and total strangers on the other.

She cleared her throat, trying to make any awkwardness disappear. “Any update on the missing trooper?”

Duke shook his head. “Unfortunately, no.”

Disappointment bit at her. Instead of continuing the awkward conversation, she decided to change the subject. “The good news is that it smells like Simmy is making more food. I didn’t realize I was still hungry until the aroma of bacon hit me.”

“Same here.” He nodded toward the cafeteria. “How about we go grab some coffee and then figure out a game plan for today?”

Her heart raced a couple of beats. A game plan? Did that mean Duke was serious about investigating? That last night hadn’t just been a whim? An emotional reaction to everything that had happened?

And if Duke was investigating, was it the sort of investigating that simply required sitting in front of a computer making notes? Or was he thinking about getting out of here to do some real footwork?

Andi hoped it was the latter.

But she didn’t want to show her eagerness and have Duke ask too many questions either.
