Chapter Ten

Kelsey stalked through the doorway of the General Store and glared back at Pete with all her might. How dare he use her this way?

He stepped in beside her, bathed in the bright, morning sunlight that streamed through the large front window, his character now as clearly illuminated as the brilliantly lit features of his lying, cheating face.

How had she ever thought him handsome?

He turned to her and smiled, as if nothing had just happened at the livery. As if he hadn’t just threatened to leave her at the mercy of Ned Baker.

She glanced away, her stomach suddenly twisted in angry and confused knots. How could she have been so duped?

Pete strode further into the store, the shadows cast by the lettering on the window dappling his back as he stopped beside a wooden barrel full of pickles. He grabbed the large, cloth sack labeled rice that was propped against the barrel and raised it into the air. “Got any more of these, Jimmy?” he called out to the man behind the long wood counter five feet to Kelsey’s left along the wall.

The skinny storekeeper walked to his side, scattering dust motes that floated in the hot, sunlit air. “How many you need?” he asked.

Pete handed him a list. “Enough for twelve men for a week. Plus shovels, pickaxes, buckets…”

All the mining supplies Kelsey had told Pete yesterday they would need.

Of course, yesterday, she’d thought she liked him. She’d thought he was a man worthy of her trust. She’d thought he was a man worthy of her—

Her breath came out in a burst of air. Thank God she hadn’t done anything more than kiss him.

“That’s a lot of equipment,” Jimmy said. He gave Pete a shrewd glance. “You planning to work that silver mine I’ve heard rumors about?”

Across the store, a horse harness clattered to the floor, dropped by a man straining to hear Pete’s answer.

“Not personally,” Pete said, loud enough for everyone else to hear. “Bill’s in charge of my mine.” He moved to Kelsey’s side and started pulling cans of food from the wood shelves behind her, stacking the cans on the counter. “He’s put together a work party and is leaving today to work the claim I just filed.”

He smiled and looked at Kelsey. “I’m a man of leisure now.”

She raised her eyes to the ceiling. She had to give it to him. He really could lie convincingly.

And, in this case, as perverse as it was, the better he lied, the safer she would be. As long as Ned Baker fell for the fake claim Bill was going to spend the next week at.

“Lucky you,” Jimmy said with an envious look. “So what’s a man of leisure do with his time?”

Pete looped his arm through hers, and she fought the urge to push him into the pickle barrel’s pungent brine. “Miss Kelsey and I plan to tour the countryside for the next week.”

A gasp came from the direction of two women fingering a bolt of gingham in the back of the store.
