CHAPTER 13
I spend the next few days keeping my distance from Rohan. Whenever I see him approaching, I walk in the opposite direction. Even in our shared classes, I pretend to do something or talk to someone so he can't engage me in a conversation.
I'm being stupid about the whole thing, but we both know we were going to end up this way. There's no reason for us to talk anymore, now that he's done with his essay. I'm just speeding up the process.
And, yeah, sparing myself the heartache. Not that I'm having success on that front. As it is, my feelings for him are already growing. I just need to tamp them down first, and I'm hoping that avoiding him will help with that.
It makes me feel like a jerk, but it's not like I can talk to Rohan about it. I can't just walk up to him and confess my feelings.
No. This is the better option.
It's better for the both of us.
But luck doesn't stick to my side for long.
Because just as I'm done dropping off food orders, the doors of the pizza place swing open and Rohan walks in, his eyes glancing around as if looking for someone.
He goes to Todd's Pizza every day, and I manage to avoid him by having Sally serve his table. Every single time, I watch his shoulders sag when he sees her approaching.
I'm really such a jerkâbecause that's exactly what I'm about to do again. Feeling guilty and pissed off with myself, I avoid his darting eyes and quickly make a beeline for the bathroom. Where I waste several minutes pretending to freshen up.
But when I get out, someone's waiting for me in the hall. "Rohan."
"Been busy lately?" He's leaning against the wall, his face unreadable. He's not happy with me.
I swallow hard. Looking at him makes me realize I've missed him. I missed talking to him and hanging out with him. Hell, even writing the paper with him.
But, gah, I missed his face, too. Those full lips that used to be fixed in a permanent scowl, but in my presence always curved in a smile. The perfect slant of his nose that I secretly want to pinch. The dark depths of his eyes I can get lost in all day.
Shit. I'm in too deep.
"El?"
"Y-Yeah," I stutter, barking out an awkward laugh. "Finals are approaching, you know? Gotta bury my head in books."
I mean, that's true. I've been studying a lot.
"Liar," he says softly, making me flinch. "You've been avoiding me. Why?"
He sounds both hurt and perplexed I almost hang my head in shame. But I can't confirm his assumption. "I'm not avoiding you. I've just been really busy with schoolwork." I pause. "Plus, I had to rewrite my essay."
Now, the last part is a lie. I didn't rewrite my essay. I just feel like I have to tell him something.
Not that he's buying it. He still looks a little suspicious. "You're too busy you're not even answering my messages?" Frustration crosses his features as he runs a hand through his hair.
