Chapter Nine

WORSHIP TO THE WHITE HOUSE

Some would say that it’s not always about the final destination but it’s the journey that gets you to that place. At the time of this story, I am still a fairly young man (36 years young), married to the woman of my dreams, and have four beautiful children. I grew up in the small town of Greenville, Texas where I was a worship leader by the age of ten. Full-time ministry and music have been my life since I can remember, but that changed around 2014.

I was leading worship at a Joan Hunter conference near Houston, Texas, and my good friend Lisa was the official photographer. She randomly (not so random) mentioned to me that I should look into becoming a photographer. At the time, I probably laughed at her and said something like, “You’re crazy.” Remember, I’d always been a musician and worship leader, so changing my “profession” wasn’t even a thought. Lisa handed me her camera during one of the messages and told me to take a few pictures. I did, and it was love at first snap.

Lisa had told me to pray about getting into photography. More specifically, she told me to look into political photography. Now, I knew she was really insane because I didn’t even like politics at the time; however, I told her I’d pray about it. After I returned home to the Phoenix area, I began to ask God what it was all about. I felt like He gave me the green light to begin looking into political photography.

My wife, Kylie, started attending a local Bible study, and by divine appointment our state senator’s wife attended the same group. Kylie mentioned that I was trying to get into photography and that I should connect with Senator Steve Smith. I called him and told him my story and that I was trying to get some experience in photography. He was gracious enough to invite me to the state capitol to take some photos.

About a month or two into learning about photography, the Lord woke me up with the words, “You’ll be the chief photographer at the White House someday.”

I literally responded with, “What is that?” I got out of bed and did what anyone would do who had just heard the Lord tell them something they didn’t know anything about—I Googled it.

Jesus knew what He was talking about because that is a position at the White House. As you could imagine, I was super excited to hear those words. But then I started to think, “Wait…I don’t have a degree in photo-journalism. I don’t have any contacts in DC. I don’t even have professional gear.”

My mind started racing, but He quickly calmed me down and told me to take one step at a time. He gave me a decree to make every day. I obeyed. As I dropped my kids off at school, I would decree this:

■I will be the nation’s leading political
