Chapter 20

Drew stared at the enraged mother in shock.

What the hell? That doesn’t even make sense!

“Look… uh…” he paused to remember her name.

Rebecca!

“Look Rebecca, I need to get home to my family in Colorado. I can’t stay here.”

“Then take us with you!” she said, adamant.

“I don’t know you, and you don’t know me. Why would you even want to come with me? I killed your husband for God’s sake!”

Tears threatened to burst forth from her eyes as she desperately admitted. “If you leave, we’re dead… my baby’s dead.” Rebecca’s voice cracked and turned into a sob.

Crap! What should I do?

Drew definitely did not want to bring anyone else with him. The mother and child would slow him down, and he was afraid he was already too late for his family as it was.

Don’t think about that. Just focus on getting there.

“I don’t think you realize how dangerous it is out there. What about your family? I can drop you off at their house if it’s not too far.”

Rebecca sniffed and wiped her wet eyes. “They’re in Phoenix.”

Drew shook his head.

I’m not going back there.

“It doesn’t matter though,” she added. “My parents disowned me when I married George.” In a small voice, she said, “They didn’t like him.”

In a sarcastic voice Matt replied, “Gee I wonder why not?”

Rebecca immediately flew to her husband’s defense. “He was a good man! He just had a temper! George can be… could be so wonderful at times...” She trailed off.

Drew looked down and closed his eyes. He enclosed his head with his hands and massaged his temples.

I can’t believe I’m even considering this.

“Fine. You can come, but on one condition. I’m in charge, and decide what we do. I’m not going to make random pit stops that’ll put us in danger.”

“I want to come too!” Tiffany added.

Drew threw his hands up into the air.

“Why! Why would you want to go on a dangerous trip across the country? You have food and shelter here, you have guns to protect yourself. Going with us will be more dangerous, not less!” By the end of his rant, Drew had started to yell.

The baby began to wail.

Drew ignored the infant. “Tiffany, what about you, don’t you have any family?”

“Sure do, but unless you want to drop me off in Chicago, I got nobody else.” She looked over at the wounded man on the floor. “And I’m definitely not staying here with Doug.

“Fine. Pack up your clothes and supplies. No more than a single bag.” Drew turned to Rebecca, “You can have two.”

The women walked out of the room, and the room grew noticeably quieter. The baby continued to wail as his mother packed. Drew heard quiet whimpering from the floor and was reminded of Doug once again.

“Have you decided what you want to do with him?”

“I say we leave him here and take the guns.” Matt said seriously.

“You sure? With a broken hand and jaw, and no gun, it might be kinder to just kill him now.”

“Exactly.” Matt agreed. “That’s why we leave him alive.
