I only vaguely remembered writing this. I was amazed Uncle had kept a copy, especially a copy of the original written version. There was extra writing in several places, and I concentrated to make out what had been added.
âA+. Shows understanding beyond your years. Well done.â
For the life of me, I could not remember my teacherâs name.
âAnother in the long line of Hunters who will captain ships?â was written in my Uncleâs hand.
Under it was âDefinitely, I think. He will either follow me as Captain, or he will be the one foretold by prophesy.â
It had to be my fatherâs handwriting.
Under that was âI hope he becomes captain after you. The other is unthinkable.â
My mother.
I teared up again. Here was a connection to home, still eleven and a half months away on the other side of the yearly doorway.
I repacked the photos and essay, and completed packing everything else away. I sealed the travel sled, and parked it out of the way.
I arose, feeling stiff and sore, and bumped into my combat suit. I was reminded I hadn't tried it yet. I stepped around it to the back, triggered it to open, stepped inside and the back closed around me. The systems came online. I could see, via a sort of surround screen, all the way around the inside of the head section. A pop up asked if I wished to install suit control overlays for my combat programs. I did. My stomach gurgled at that point reminding me I should eat something. I was about to exit the suit, when it occurred to me I shouldnât just leave it there. But where to store it? I pinged the inner door of the airlock with an open command. I walked gingerly into the airlock, and stood against the side wall. I opened and stepped back out of the suit, and left it there, closing the lock door behind me.
I put together my first meal on board my own ship, ham and salad sandwiches, being that was all Iâd bought the makings for. I took them back to the pilotâs seat with a bottle of water and sat there, munching away.
I stared out the front view screen, as Outback came steadily closer. I felt lonely. I wondered what my new friends were doing. I pulled out my pad between mouthfuls and started searching for emails in the ones I hadn't read yet. Nothing. On a whim, I setup a priority notification if something came in from them, so Iâd get a pop up and noise notification if one did.
I went back to munching and slurping, watching the planet get bigger. Soon Iâd be as close to home as I could get. But the closer I came, the more it felt like I may as well have been in a galaxy far far away.
