“You sure you’re not contagious?”

Jonas turned to his research partner, Tarek, and gave him a look. “I took the blue pill. And I had my blood tested. I’m not bleeding from my eyes, and neither will you.”

Tarek raised an eyebrow, then turned back to his screen, where the data from Frannie’s black box downloaded into their shared server.

In his late twenties, Tarek was wiry and smart, with round glasses, blond hair that hung behind his ears, and so much energy he could be plugged in and used as a generator, his feet always tapping, his brain always on overdrive.

He’d already done a deep dive into caesium-137 and its possible side effects, none of which Jonas wanted to hear.

What he wanted to know was where and how the Russians got ahold of the nuclear waste.

Or better yet, who exactly had snatched his dirigible from the air and used it to terrorize a small village.

“You showered?”

“Please. Twice. And I went home and changed clothes before coming here. My other clothes are in a bag at the hospital.” Which, actually, was only located a few blocks from his office-slash-lab in the College of Geodetic, Environmental, and Civil Engineering.

Too close, really, because his brain was still stuck on that kiss.

That. Kiss.

But she’d walked away from him and, really, probably saved both of them heartache.

Because he’d seen the look on her face as she dissected that minefield. She wasn’t afraid. Or if she was, she hid it under layers of calm. Which made her brilliant at her job.

Not so much as a life partner.

Aw, who was he kidding. The heart wanted what the heart wanted, and right now, it was back at the hospital, or on her doorstep, so he could continue their kiss.

“Hello, Jonas. Come in, Jonas.”

He sighed and looked at Tarek. “Sorry.”

“The download is done, and I went ahead and opened it to sort the data.”

Their office wasn’t large—it didn’t even have windows. Just two long tables, numerous computer screens, a mini fridge, and a dart board.

And it smelled like an old basement.

Which it was.

Jonas tried not to think about the fact that he’d gone from high speed action chases across the Midwest to staring at a screen in a darkened room. No wonder he wanted more out of life. And kissing Sibba hadn’t helped at all. Especially now that he was back in the cellar.

Three flatscreen televisions hung from the wall, all of them tuned to local weather channels. Another screen—connected to the GSP monitoring system—tracked weather balloons five and six: Farah and Sally.

It looked like Farah had stayed on course, her trajectory over northern Slovenia, through the mountains.

Sally, however, had veered off, heading south toward Croatia.

“Have you tried to get Sally back on track?” he’d asked Tarek when he came into the office.

Scared the guy, who’d been eating a bowl of pork dumplings. The smell made Jonas’s stomach roar. He hadn’t eaten since this morning, some toast and jam.

Tarek passed him over a thermos. “My mom made them this morning.”

Jonas handed Tarek the black box and took the thermos.
