I was dropped hastily on my feet inside the room. As I struggled to maintain my balance, Spec whirled and went out the door, shutting it solidly behind him. On the landing, I could hear Kobee's protest, but then their footsteps moved back down the stairs. Jason and I stood looking at each other.

His hair was a mess, clearly slept on. His shirt was hastily pulled on, not buttoned, and hung loose revealing a muscled stretch of olive-toned chest and stomach that made me want to snuggle into him. I thought, for just an instant, that if I could just touch him, everything would be OK. But his eyes were wild—however he tried to suppress his reaction—brewing with questions, and trepidation, and the thing I had hoped I wouldn't see—anger.

"What the hell do you think you're doing, Lily?" he asked as he stepped toward me. "Do you have any idea?"

I closed my eyes against the sting of his rebuke and tried to breathe deeply. Every part of my chest and stomach ached at the attempt. When I opened my eyes, I looked at him calmly. "I know," I said. "I had to. I'll tell you."

He could see my lack of breath, and waited. In the time it took, he stepped closer and touched my chin, tilting it to examine the gash on my lip, the blood and bruises on my face. A touch of that old tenderness was in his expression, but his eyes were filled with alarm. Again, he looked down the length of me. "You're hurt," he murmured, then, as if the thoughts were connected, "Kade's sister. Is that true?"

Again, I attempted a nod. His fingers slid off my chin as it dipped. My eyes closed. The sigh drained out of me. I had so much to explain, and so little energy to do it with. More than anything, I longed to sit down.

Suddenly realizing my weariness, he pulled out a chair and guided me into it. His knife slashed my bonds so quickly, I hadn't even realized it was in his hands. As I sank into the chair, he squatted before me. "This is bad," he whispered. "You need to tell me what's going on because... because right now I can't think of any reason why you would be this stupid."

I had started to feel like I was never going to be able to speak, at least until I had rested. But time was shorter and shorter. I hustled out an explanation before I could fail completely. It was blunt, and lacking, but it would have to do. "They've made this weapon," I muttered, feeling my tongue sticking in my mouth, trying to choke me. "They're aiming it at you right now. To kill you all. Kade wouldn't stand up to them, so I've made him. You have a hostage."

He blinked at me in silence. His face was so blank. "A hostage," he finally said.

It took some more breaths to go on. "I trashed my room," I explained.
