CHAPTER SEVEN

UPHEAVAL

Jarzen was working on a complex experiment when Master Gadric stormed into the lab, fuming and muttering to himself.

“They are transferring Admiral Quzarian and his fleet at the end of the month. We’ll have a new military governor to contend with; although I don’t believe he will have much power. The FHC is transferring the seat of government to New Tar-Que; they’ll arrive next week with our new protector. I resent the time we’ll lose in training a new administration. Admiral Quzarian was a visionary; I fear we will not find his like again.”

“Master, who has the authority to transfer the admiral? I thought he was the highest ranking officer in the military; the Commander in Chief of all Federation forces.”

“Quite right, alas; now the politicians reveal a brief glimpse of their true plans. You see, my young protégée, the military serves the people of the Federation who are represented by the Federation High Council. Admiral Quzarian is the head of the military, but he and all military commanders are subordinate to the FHC. My instincts tell me life is going to become a lot more dangerous. I sense Trevin’s hand in this, that insignificant petty bureaucrat…. We will have to watch him closely.”

“Master, what is a petty bureaucrat?”

“Jarzen, I guess I’ve neglected an essential part of your education. A bureaucrat is an official who works for the government, oversees and administers its rules and regulations. A very wise man once described a bureaucrat as: ‘someone who makes the possible impossible’.”

“Master, do you know where they are sending the admiral?”

“Into oblivion, I fear; possibly into legend. The FHC is has ordered Admiral Quzarian to take the war to the Emarc; he’s to personally lead our forces to victory.”

“Master, are you saying he’s to be put at risk leading our forces into battle?”

“Jarzen my young protégée; that’s the rumor and rumor is often based in truth.”

“Master, even I know you never risk your top military commanders … unless; no it can’t be; unless you are trying to get them killed. Why would the Federation High Council be trying to kill off the admiral? Master this makes absolutely no sense.”

“Jarzen, as usual, you’re a very apt pupil. On the face of it, you are correct; however, you must factor in politics. There is more going on here than can be seen. I definitely see Trevin’s hand at work here. Trevin is a truly contemptible man. Jarzen, from today forward, I’m changing your routine; whenever I leave Kleet, you will travel with me. There are many in the recently resettled academic community who resent my having taken you on as a student. I need to publicly cement our relationship. More to the point; I need to showcase your insightful brilliance.”

“Master, if taking me on as a student is causing you problems; I will immediately return to fishing in Telmar.”

“I’ll be alright Jarzen; as long as they need me, and they rediscover that need on a regular basis. Jarzen, whenever an academic ventures
