The Battle of Okinawa ends

After three months of fighting, the Allies won control of the island. Referred to by the Japanese as Tetsu no Ame (‘Rain of Steel’), the conflict resulted in around 13,000 American soldiers dead, with casualties on the Japanese side numbering approximately 90,000. At least 100,000 Okinawans were listed as dead or missing.

Many Japanese soldiers committed seppuku, or blew themselves up with hand grenades rather than be taken prisoner. This was due in part to the code of bushido, which declared that capture by an enemy was worse than death, but also because of propaganda received from their superiors. This stated that the Americans would commit unspeakable atrocities upon them, were they to become their captors. (Many Okinawans, receiving this same information, threw themselves from cliffs rather than be captured.)
