I didnât expect a response, but I got one immediately.
Thank you. Youâre one in a million. Sleep well.
I plan to. You do the same.
Iâll try.

I tried texting Ken tonight, but I never got much of a response. Just a âheyâ when I said hello. It seems kind of weird, but since itâs the start of finals, I guess it isnât that weird. When I didnât hear from him Monday or Tuesday, I knew it had to be because of finals. So I had to wait until our final on Wednesday to tell him about my adventures on Saturday night.
âYou would not believe the weekend I had,â I said as soon as I saw him.
âHm,â was all he said. It wasnât even a curious âhm,â or a polite âgo-ahead, Iâm listeningâ sort of âhm.â It was more a distracted sort of âhm.â So I went with the tell-him-anyway plan, as opposed to the get-upset-because-heâs-not-listening plan.
âThatâs nice,â he said when I stopped for air. Wow, talk about really not listening! Okay, time to do the listening, he must have a lot on his mind.
âAre you all right?â I asked.
âSure, Iâm fine,â he answered.
âHow was your weekend?â
âGood.â
Wow, he wasnât giving me much to go on.
âThat good, huh?â I prodded him. âNo gory details? No tales of bravado and derring-do?â
âNo, nothing that exciting. Got all my homework done. That can be a triumph of a sort. I had a big paper I had to turn in this morning. Iâm really glad the biology final isnât until Friday.â
âWell, then, you should look happier.â
âOh,â he finally sighed and said, âI had a kind of unhappy conversation with my parents over the weekend. I want to be a marine biologist, but my parents donât think Iâd make enough money living at a study facility on a beach in Costa Rica. My mother wants me to go to business school. My father wants me to get an accounting degree to go into banking or finance, and I think my grandmother wants me to be a CEO. I canât even just be an accountant, that still isnât good enough for them.â
I was amazed. Did he sound like Edward Farris, or what? Well, I could certainly learn a thing or two from Elinor Dashwood. She was certainly the more admirable sister, if you think about it. Kind and selfless and steady. What would Elinor say?
âWhat are you going to do?â
âI donât know. Itâs my life, I should be able to do what I want. But theyâre the ones paying for my education. So Iâm kind of stuck.â
âCan you take out student loans? Or, can you get your MBA, and then use the money from being a CEO to fund your marine biologist degree?â I asked.
Ken smiled a little. âI will admit, that hadnât occurred to me.â
The teacher started handing out the exam books for the final. I was so glad I was able to get a smile out of him, at least, beforehand. Then the lights went out, and we watched a short movie, after which we had to answer a lot of questions about it.
