Chapter 23
Much as she likes filing, and helping people, and organizing displays, Jazzy finds the quiet little moments when it is just her, alone in the close-knit aisles with a cart spilling with books is when she feels the most content. Sheâs always had a talent for organization, which is probably partly why she belongs in a library setting.
Usually no one disturbs her, aside from the occasional wanderer passing through the aisles. So she nearly jumps out of her skin when the footsteps padding across the thick carpet are suddenly getting closer and closer until a pair of strong hands grab around her waist.
âChrist,â she breathes, just barely able to keep her voice below a whisper, âyou canât just sneak up on me in here.â
âBut I need help finding a book,â Glen protests, his lips softly touching against her cheek as she fights back a smile and pulls away, snatching a handful of books from the cart in front of her.
âYou still havenât finished reading the last one you checked out,â she reminds him, beginning to shuffle away the books in her arms into the correct places on the shelves before her. âNow go and wait for me. Youâre twenty minutes early.â
âThe bus was on time for once. Therefore, Iâm early.â
She always claims sheâs embarrassed for Glen to come in and watch her whenever she works a late shift and he comes to ride the bus back with her, but to be honest, she always gets a pleasant feeling whenever he gets to see her work. Itâs nice to be able to show off what she does well.
âI actually have some news for you,â she says, taking a quick glance around to make sure her supervisor isnât about to walk by and see her chatting with her boyfriend as she puts the books away. Sheâs not really sure if thatâs against the rules or not. âI ran into Liza on my way out earlier.â
âOh.â Glenâs voice is suddenly devoid of chipperness as he picks up a small pile of books from the cart and glances over them. âGreat.â
Even though she and Liza are pretty steady friends again, her and Glen havenât spoken since that night in the hallway.
âShe invited us to a party.â
Glen says nothing for a moment as he silently hands her off the books heâs holding.
âShe invited⦠us, to a party?â
âWell, technically Amanda invited us. Itâs a pool party at her house. A lot of the girls are bringing their boyfriends apparently, so⦠Amanda suggested I bring you.â
Curious about his reaction, sheâs surprised when he laughs as he walks around to help her push the book cart further down the aisle. Another reason she secretly loves it when he shows up during her shift is because he is much more efficient at pushing the fifty-pound cart of books without nearly tipping it over every half-foot.
âIâm starting to feel like one of those tiny little fluffy dogs that get carried around by all the rich people,â he comments. âIs
