“You can tell Daddy dearest that I don’t stink any more, Momma.”

My sister’s statement came from the stairwell leading down to the kitchen. Razor, my parents, and I had moved from the formal living room to the family room located at the back of house. My father had promptly gone out to the back patio, and I had a feeling that was predominantly because of Razor being in the house. Or maybe he was feeling the pain of failing his youngest daughter and needed to be alone. I didn’t know that, but I did know that he was pacing up a storm out there, and I was certain that, if he still smoked, he’d be puffing away.

Cecilia hit the family room and skittered to a halt. “Really, Neil? You brought a killer into our childhood home?”

I closed my eyes and took in a deep breath. Mom had just met the man, so this was certainly not the time to inform her about him offing a woman, provoked or not, justified or not. Opening my eyes, I thought I’d see my mother’s face blanch again, but her gaze at Razor was pensive. I couldn’t fathom my mother being so calm about this. Maybe she only had one huge freak-out in her per day?

“You’re a prospect, I heard Dave say to you. Were you tossed out of a club? I mean no disrespect, but you don’t look like someone who’s brand-spanking-new to the MC scene.”

Razor gave her a weak grin. “No, ma’am. I’m not new to the MC scene and no disrespect taken at all. What I did put my former club in a bad spot, and I was willing to face those consequences. Bottom line, in a tight-knit club no brother wants to forsake the Brotherhood once he’s earned his patch, but things were shifting to a bad place in that one and it was unraveling. So, except for them skinning my shoulder to remove my tat, I didn’t mind losing my patch. To say that woman was positively unhinged is the e-fuckin’-pitome of an understatement.”

‘Pensive’ shifted to ‘assessing’ when my mother said, “You were kicked out.”

“Jesus, Mom! He just said that, and for God’s sake, he killed an innocent woman. How you can stand to have his sorry ass in this house, I’ll never know!”

“Ceil,” I started, but my mother interrupted.

“Cecilia. I’m not a moron. You may not know this, but I ran around with the president of the Riot MC back before your father and I got married. I know that men in the MC world do not take lives without damn good reason. Furthermore, I now know that you’re not just in deep with addiction, you’re apparently in deep with a goddamn pimp! Is he the person who blackened your eyes and busted your lip?”

Cecilia and my mother had been holding each other’s eyes, but when Mom screeched ‘pimp,’ Cecilia’s eyes cut to me. “What the fuck! You told her? Leave it to you, the oh-so-high-and-mighty Neil to make sure you look like the golden child at all times.
