My clients often tell me that distraction is a major issue in their workplace. They say that being able to stay in the moment is difficult.
According to Dr Gloria Mark’s research, office workers get interrupted every three minutes on average – that’s 20 times per hour. It’s reported to take an average of 25 minutes to get back to the original task after being distracted.5
These constant interruptions impact on our enjoyment as we experience less flow and get caught up in trying to do more with less time to compensate. Naturally this affects performance.
The most fascinating thing about these findings is where these constant interruptions come from. Nearly half of these were reported as self-induced.
This makes total sense. Most people don’t recognise that their own thinking is their biggest distraction. The gravitational pull of our incessant internal chatter feels strong and compelling sometimes.
Let’s explore some classic examples of how we stifle our productivity and effectiveness by taking ourselves out of flow and how we can reverse it with just one new thought.
It’s not the size of your list!
Do you ever complain that your to-do list is overwhelming or stressing you out?
It seems pretty funny when we see how illogical this is. As soon as we put Thought back into the performance formula we put ourselves back in the driver’s seat of our experience.
Rachel is a client who has been learning about the nature of Thought. She shared the following story with me and I thought it was a perfect illustration of what we do to ourselves – innocently of course.
