Blaafarvevaerket and Eggedal

Another excellent day trip from Oslo that could easily be extended into an overnight visit, is the drive west to Drammen and up Highways 283 and 35 to Åmot ° [map] (72km/45 miles) and its historic cobalt mine museum. Called Blaafarvevaerket, the ‘Blue Colour Works’, this 18th century industrial area is now the site of special art exhibitions every summer. The old factory area is open from late May to late September, daily from 11am, as are adjacent historic areas and the old cobalt mine itself a few kilometres away.

The drive takes around an hour, and it is wise to arrive early, as it’s a popular destination for locals all summer long. In addition to the main art exhibit, usually featuring prominent Scandinavian artists, there are shops and a café serving traditional Norwegian foods, a petting zoo for children and picnic areas along the river.

There is also a historical area and waterfall a short walk up the river. Tours are available through the old mine.

The road past Blaafarvevaerket continues through the valley of Sigdal up to Eggedal, an area popular with artists. The former homes of artists Theodor Kittelsen and Christian Skredsvig, the latter in Eggedal, are open to the public during summer. There is also a folk museum in Sigdal, and you can get a taste of the Norwegian mountains just beyond Eggedal at Tempelseter, located on the western slope of the mountain known as Norefjell, which is popular with hikers and skiers.
