Tate Britain 2 [map] (Millbank; www.tate.org.uk; daily 10am–6pm, until 10pm selected Fri; free) in Pimlico is the original Tate Gallery and home to the national collection of British art from 1500 to the present day. Opened in 1897, it was designed by Sydney Smith in classical style, and built on the site of a prison.
The permanent collection is almost entirely contained on one floor (level 2). As you enter the building through the front porticoed entrance on Millbank, you go through a succession of grand halls with galleries off to the left and right.
