Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece, ‘The Last Supper’.

Public domain

Return in the direction of the Duomo to the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana L [map], an art gallery founded by Cardinal Federico Borromeo in 1618, along with a frescoed library that also displays designs by Leonardo da Vinci (for bookings tel: 02-806 921; www.ambrosiana.it; Tue–Sun 10am–6pm). The restored gallery (same times) houses an art collection dating from the 15th to the 17th century. Most notable among the works are Leonardo’s Portrait of a Musician, Titian’s Adoration of the Magi and Caravaggio’s Basket of Fruit.

Leonardo da Vinci is inextricably linked to Milan, even if Milan is rarely linked to the Renaissance. Apart from his celebrated Last Supper and the ingenious inventions on display in the Museum of Science, Leonardo, with his passion for hydraulic engineering, also designed the complex locks in Milan’s Navigli canals. Leonardo was the complete Renaissance Man, at home with art, astronomy, mechanics and warfare. Nowhere is this revealed better than in the Sacrestia Bramante, Bramante’s Renaissance sacristy, and the Biblioteca Ambrosiana, a 17th-century frescoed library, sites chosen to display the polymath’s complete Codex Atlanticus folios. The Codex, the largest extant collection of Leonardo drawings and designs, has been in the Ambrosiana since 1637, but can only be displayed properly now.
