Gaol and Graveyard

Continuing eastwards onto Waterloo Place is the Old Calton Burial Ground 6 [map], in which lie many of the great names of the Scottish Enlightenment, including the philosopher David Hume. The obelisk, which was erected in 1844, commemorates exiled revolutionary Thomas Muir and several other political martyrs. George E Bissell’s 1893 Emancipation Monument, depicting Abraham Lincoln with a freed slave kneeling at his feet, is in memory of the Scottish soldiers who died fighting in the American Civil War.

Next to the graveyard facing westwards is St Andrew’s House, Thomas Tait’s 1939 Art Deco structure that serves as the headquarters of the Scottish Government. It was built on the site of the Calton Jail, once Scotland’s largest prison, though only the mock medieval tower, known as Governor’s House, survives.

With Calton Hill looming above, beyond on Regent Road is the Old Royal High School, a Greek Doric building designed by Thomas Hamilton in 1829, and though slated to be the location of the new Scottish Parliament, it was rejected on grounds of size in 1997. Nearby is the 1830 Greek-temple style Burns Monument – again designed by Thomas Hamilton – which also overlooks the New Calton Burial Ground, dating from 1821 and lying close to Holyrood Palace.
