Some Modern War Room Exemplars

There are a broad range of designs used in war rooms. Exemplars offered here are only one set of exemplars. Instructors should be prepared to tolerate student creativity within some basic specifications boundary conditions. Even with such constraints, we have witnessed an interesting range of different instantiations. Modern war rooms are initially, perhaps best, exemplified by a range of examplars briefly overviewed next.

The issue-centered blogs are starting points often useful for CyberForensic war room research assignments and may provide reasonable starting points for student team approaches to create their own unique website designs. Of course, some student teams faithfully reproduce exemplars without much change, so the range of creativity has been broad in our experience. The Electronic Frontier Foundation (eff.org)1 is a broad, multi-issue driven exemplar with a broader scope and richer depth than could ever be expected for student projects. Nevertheless, sometimes aspirational exemplars are best to motivate even if they sometimes are daunting.

War Room Exemplar—EFF

Consider how the Electronic Frontier Foundation (eff.org) serves to defend Internet user rights by informing and participating quite deeply in that public policy debate. EFF is often a quite effective advocate in the courts, in regulatory agency venues and in influencing state legislatures and the Congress. These objectives lie at the heart of many war room project assignment themes. EFF fairly exhaustively collects primary and secondary documents on various aspects of Internet rights and responsibilities. Next, EFF forthrightly summarizes, organizes and critiques these from a clearly articulated point of view. EFF makes these materials globally accessible and searchable providing very considerable policy-analytic, value-added perspectives. EFF users need not invest anything except exposure time and careful consideration.

Much of EFF’s repository is populated with government documents that are in the public domain (unless classified or otherwise confidentially protected). Our long experience clearly illustrates that undergraduate students are ignorant of public domain matters. Of course, some students understand classified military documents but this seldom translates into the larger copyright issue, making this an important “teaching opportunity.” Key EFF documents are the result of the EFF staff’s own analytical and advocacy work that becomes dedicated for public use. There are many other nations with much less transparency in their government documents or that stifle free and open debate on public policy issues. In years of experience with undergraduate students, we have discovered that when many students explore public policy issues, they are initially ignorant about the public domain as they embark on various forms of data harvesting. Thus, an important teachable moment(s) are the frequent encounters students experience that appear to cause cognitive dissonance with their training elsewhere in data harvesting and the resulting durable expectations.
