CHAPTER 17

Payson, Arizona

Jaycee laughed, so hard that warm soda almost came out of his nostrils. He brought his hand up to cover it, still chuckling in that dry half-silent way he always did, like he was choking rather than laughing.

“And then,” Chad says, annunciating his words by bobbing his fork before him like a sword, “She says: You wouldn’t have. It’s a school.”

Jaycee laughed again, lurching forward against the table with his eyes pressed closed and watering. “She didn’t say that?”

She saw them from a few tables over and nodded.

He swallowed, then motioned to Jaycee. “What about you? You must have some stories.”

“Oh yeah. Remember that time I got lynched? That was fun.”

Chad laughed. “I’m serious. Guy doesn’t grow up looking like you without learning to play the dozens.”

Jaycee looked back at his glass for a moment, watching the way the light reflected off of it.

Chad’s smile wilted slightly. “No offense.”

He smiled. “None taken.”

Chad watched him for a moment, then went back to his chicken penne.

Jaycee smiled and leaned in, resting his elbows on the table. “There was this one time during a pep rally...”
