Chapter 21

"The kitchen's not that bad," Lucas said, as a cop with a German shepherd made rounds of the Great White. "One oven out of commission, the wall behind it blackened, and one cooler warped from the heat." He planted his fists on his hips and took stock of the bar. "You could use a fresh coat of paint in here. We can do repairs in a day. Get that company down from Bluffet Edge to do a professional cleaning to get rid of the smoke smell, and you'll be up and running in no time."

Finn barely heard him. He watched as the man with the dog circled the bar, moving from wall to wall to stool to behind the bar and, finally, to the pair of restrooms in the corner with anchors on the doors. The Mate's door flapped shut behind them.

"I'd better check out the basement." Lucas said and disappeared downstairs.

"Mr. Cavallo? You have a few minutes?" The other stranger in the bar, a fire investigator who'd driven in that morning from New Haven, scraped a chair along the floor. He stuck out a hand. "Alan Mendez."

Finn returned the shake, then pulled up his own chair backwards and straddled it. Ankle bandaged, pain killers with breakfast, and he was good to go. Except for this little visit.

Mendez dropped a folder onto the table as he sat down, then licked his thumb and flipped through a worn notepad. Ink covered the pages, tight and dark, letters pressed into the paper so hard they left ridges on the blank pages in between. He stopped about midway and dug a pen from his shirt pocket. "I won't keep you long. Just have a few questions."

Finn scowled but nodded. He had to do it for the insurance company, but it stuck in the back of his throat, the implication of answering these kinds of questions about his own business. Cook already told you it was a grease fire in the kitchen

No, he hadn't seen anyone suspicious around the Great White this week. Yes, Honey Bellflower and a restaurant full of diners at the Lobster Pot could vouch for his whereabouts when the fire was called in. He rubbed the back of his neck and decided not to mention Aubrey.

Mendez scribbled as they talked, nodding and grunting and not giving away much of anything. While he concentrated on the page, Finn tried to decipher the man's upside down shorthand.

Problem was, the coincidence of Finn changing his insurance policy less than two weeks ago had raised all kinds of red flags. You think I tried to burn my own place down? he wanted to ask. For the money? It took everything he had to keep both hands in his lap and his ass planted in the chair. The guy was just doing his job, he reminded himself. Same as everyone else.

Mendez flipped to a fresh sheet of paper. "Last couple of questions. I'm a new guy in the office, just got assigned a bunch of old files.
