Chapter 23

Gavin Merrick stood before King Pravus in the man’s throne room, his hands clasped behind his back. The king was seated on his throne, leaning back in a posture of utter relaxation. The man was strikingly handsome, it was true, and clearly well-built. Obviously quite vain. A fact that could be used against him.

And it was quite clear that the young monarch was wearing a rather large and prominent codpiece beneath his black-and-gold pants.

Or at least, Gavin hoped it was a codpiece.

“Go away, Desmond,” Pravus urged, waving an old man – Desmond, if Gavin remembered corrected – standing beside the throne away. “Shoo.”

Desmond tolerated this with a practiced patience, turning about and hobbling out of the room.

“Put a little pep in your step,” Pravus called out after the man. “Haven’t got all day!”

At length, Desmond left the room, the double-doors closing behind him. King Pravus rolled his eyes, then regarded Gavin with a rather bemused look.

“I read that thing you sent me,” he declared, making a face. “Dreadful, really. So boring .”

“It’s a legal contract,” Gavin replied evenly. “It’s supposed to be boring.”

“I suppose,” Pravus conceded. “Still, I thought a man of your…” he gestured at Gavin, his eyes clearly regarding something quite a bit south of Gavin’s face, “… prominence would have come up with something more impressive.”

“If you want spectacle, go to the theatre.”

“Oho!” Pravus replied, leaning forward and rubbing his hands together eagerly. “The great lion of Borrin bites back!”

“Do you find the terms acceptable?” Gavin asked.

Pravus sighed, leaning back in the throne.

“Already signed the thing,” the king answered. “A pity. I was expecting much more…back and forth between us before we both came to the same conclusion.”

Gavin resisted the urge to grimace at the obvious double-entendre. And the urge to turn about and leave the room. He needed to remain on good terms with the king, and distract him for as long as it took to complete his mission. Marie’s advice came to him then.

Flirt with him .

“As I see it, this is merely the beginning of our relationship,” Gavin replied. Pravus’s eyebrows went up.

“Oh really ,” he murmured. “I have to say, I suspected as much from that beautiful letter you sent.”

“I hoped you’d appreciate it,” Gavin told him, with the slightest of smirks. Marie had outdone herself with it, honestly. She was a truly terrible person, in all the right ways.

“Oh I did,” Pravus confirmed. “And it was my pleasure to open my Gate to you,” he added with a twinkle in his blue eyes. Then he frowned. “I recall you saying there was some trouble in Borrin?”

“Indeed,” Gavin confirmed, his expression darkening. It wasn’t an act; the impudence of those goblins still irked him, defacing his treasured grandfather’s monument.

“What kind, pray tell?”

Gavin feigned a sigh. Of course, the question was everything he’d hoped for.

“A tribe of goblins came through the Gate after you ordered it opened,” he explained. “They massacred my people, and would have destroyed Southwick if the City Guard hadn’t managed to repel them.
