Chapter 11
Even though Scott had given Hanna her freedom back, things didnât get easier between them. Thursday, after yoga, Scott made a point to drive home before volunteering. He changed into a turtleneck and baggy pants, but Hanna still avoided him like the plague.
To make matters worse, the woman John had talked about on Tuesday showed up and immediately started bossing people around with her obnoxious nasally voice. Scott couldnât remember meeting a more unpleasant person.
As they drove home from school in silence, Scott sighed. âPatricia is awful.â He puckered his mouth and imitated her snooty accent, âIâm Patricia Smyth. Someone get me a latte.â
Hanna giggled.
Scott relaxed a little and glanced at her. âWhatâs her deal? Why does she feel like she can treat everyone like that?â
Hannaâs eyebrows raised, and then she imitated Patricia. âIâm a classically trained actor. You donât expect me to do anything with my hands, do you?â
âOh no! I broke a nail!â Scott mimicked Patricia again, putting his hand against his forehead and sighing. âQuick, someone call my driver to take me to a doctor!â
Hanna snorted. âShe probably has a maid too.â
âSheâs not even helpful with the actors. What is she classically trained in? Being a pain in the ass?â
For the first time, they laughed together.

Saturday morning, Scott got up early to make Hanna breakfast before her soccer game. Just as he started pulling out pans and ingredients, Hanna stopped him.
âNo offense, Mom, but can I just have cereal?â
Scottâs heart sank. He couldnât step foot in the kitchen without making a mess, and Hanna looked as though she had reached her limit of eating burned food. âSure.â
After they ate, Hanna picked up her bowl and put it in the sink. Scott watched with his mouth hanging open.
âWhat? Iâm capable of following instructions.â Hanna gave him a half-smile and then pulled her shin guards on. âThe game starts soon. Letâs go.â
Scott still grinned from ear to ear when they pulled into the parking lot outside the field. Hanna did what I told her to do! He made a mental note to thank Jennifer for her parenting advice.
As he walked to the bleachers, he noticed the beautiful morning sky filled with puffy white clouds. Itâs going to be a wonderful day.
Hanna got control of the ball with only a few minutes left and a two-point lead. Her feet danced across the grass, tapping the ball gently as she ran toward the goal.
This is what it feels like to be a parent. You get to watch your kids do amazing things. Scott got up on his feet and started shouting. âGo, Hanna! Go!â His chant caught on with the other moms sharing his bleacher. âGo, Hanna! Go!â
That was when it happened.
Hanna looked over at him and frowned just as her foot slipped on the ball. Her body toppled forward, hitting the ground with a solid thud. She rolled to her side and clutched her leg just as a cry exploded out of her mouth.

âThe good news is, it isnât broken.
