"That's right," Rachel said. "We hope you can come next week, Matthew. Bye, see you at school."

Somehow they got out the back gate and down the driveway and away from the house. Jared was trembling inside, and his hands were sweaty. Rachel smiled at him, her eyes shining.

"That was easier than I thought it would be," she said.

Jared wasn't sure he agreed.

"I'll bet Matthew will sure have something to say tomorrow. Me and you coming together to invite him to Sunday School! We'll never hear the end of it!"

"I don't care what he does. I feel good inside," Rachel said, "and I won't let him ruin that!"

Matthew stood still in the middle of the yard after Rachel and Jared left. He stared down at the picture in his hands. He walked over to the garbage cans to throw it away, but then he stopped. No one else was around to see him. So he slipped into the house, got out his mother's tape, and stuck the picture on the wall above his bed.
