Chapter Nine

You might be a mechanic, but in the spiritual realm, you are just a tool in the hands of God.

His father's words echoed through his head as he buttoned up his shirt. A few days ago, his father had mumbled those words to Mike in the hospital room.

The first two weeks after his father’s collapse brought a prayerful hope to the McKinley family. The doctors had not given him more than a week. But when two weeks passed, and Andrew seemed to be improving, hope soared in like a triumphant eagle, giving wings to their prayers.

Last week, he had taken a turn for the worse. Andrew had spoken to him a few days ago. “Son, this family needs you right now. Your mom is going to need you and Nathan to get her through. And Leanne and Karen need you as well. Don’t give up on them. They have a rocky journey ahead, but God has placed you in their lives to guide them to Him. Be a reflection of Him and his light, so they will find their way out of the darkness that is closing around them.”

Now, Mike stood in front of the dresser in his bedroom, dressed for his father’s funeral, and he willed himself to heed his father’s words. But there was no strength behind his will, like everything and everyone around him, his strength was crumbling before his eyes, and he felt powerless to stop it.

He was losing his grip on Leanne. Spiritually, she had made some sort of turn. These past two weeks he had found her with her nose buried in a Bible, pouring over the pages. He was happy to see her seeking God’s word, but he could tell she was wrestling with whatever she had found. Leanne looked like a woman caught between conviction and something – and if the dark circles under her eyes were any indication, that something was winning.

She had come to him two days ago, seeking solace in his arms after Andrew had died. He doubted the quick pat on her back was sufficient for her.

Mike paused as he tucked the shirt into his suit pants. Maybe he wasn’t losing his grip on her, maybe he was just letting her go. He didn’t have the strength to support her right now, and that fact alone made the weight around his neck heavier.

Then there was Karen, who was sullen and even more withdrawn than usual. She walked around sucking her thumb and rubbing her ear in worry. But it was her eyes that tore at him. Her brow was often furrowed deep in thought, and she looked at them as if trying to discern something greater than her age...greater than their age. The night before Andrew had died, Mike had walked by Karen’s room to find her rocking on her bed, tears streaming down her face, singing her favorite Bible song.

It's me, it's me, oh Lord,

Standing in the peanut bread.

Not my mother, not my father,

But it's me oh Lord,

Standing in the peanut bread.
