The next day, still floating from the engagement, we went for a little walk around town. I didn’t realize where Bill was taking me until we passed by that same old house that I had memorized inside and out.

“Oh, you’re just being cruel,” I pouted when he pointed out the “SOLD” sign in the front yard.

“Hey, let’s go knock on the door and see if anyone’s home. I wonder what type of people ended up buying it?”

After a few tries with nobody answering, Bill did what any sensible person (who wanted to die in a cheesy horror movie) would do and pushed open the door.

“Hello?” He called into the empty hallways. I stood back fitting all the pieces together in my mind.

“Wait a minute…” I hit my Eureka moment. “YOU bought this house?”

Like a little kid (with enough money to purchase a house), Bill cheered, “No, WE bought the house. It’s ours!”

I didn’t laugh in his face that time. Instead I cried. I cried because, even though my checklists were not anywhere close to being crossed off, there was no way in the universe my life could be any more perfect than it was in that moment.
