The Oasis
NO TIME LIKE THE PRESENT I ALWAYS SAY. I lead the way as the trail was now well defined. The raw wilderness endless, we went about our business, keeping the straight and narrow. Wow! Never knew the earth had this many trees and such massive, wide open spaces. We were pretty much out of everything, no food, no more water, nothing. I should have conserved more of our supplies. I sure hoped the old woman could locate some more berries like this morning. Mom always prepared our meals. They were always there, on time, when we were hungry. I never gave a thought as to how much effort went into putting all those dishes together, three times each day. Buying the groceries, choosing the ingredients, preparing the meat, vegetables, and potatoes, and making them taste great. What a job. I never appreciated the effort before now. Everything was laid out in front of me on the table to enjoy. I never lifted a finger, never thought I had to. I wouldnât mind helping put together a meal now, you better believe it. Oh well, dream on.
I motored along forgetting my companion may be not so quick of foot. I looked behind to check on her and she was gone. What now? I panicked for a second. Had she taken a turn I had missed, and left me alone going in the wrong direction? Had one of the forest predators dragged her off into the underbrush? I didnât need this. I ran back searching everywhere, yelling and screaming for her to appear. I slashed the bushes and branches with my staff, pounding the tree trunks to draw her attention. What could have happened? This is just great. Maybe she is angry at me because of the tree house incident and decided to leave me to my own ambitions. After all, she said she knew the way, and I sure didnât. Where is she?
I continued to rant and rave, scurrying in all directions like a madman. Out of the corner of my eye, I spotted someone emerge from the thick foliage, thank God, the old woman. A sigh of relief ensued, but I was definitely upset she would wander off like that without warning. Could have been the death of her...or me! Maybe I should have been paying more attention, maybe it was my fault. She wasnât lost, that was the good news, and I saw her carrying something in her baggy dress. She proudly showed me more berries and some delicious looking mushrooms. Placing the mushrooms in her oversized pocket, we shared some berries and a moment of rest. I needed the break to recover from my near heart attack.
We felt much better after the break and ready to move on. I guess we were now back on even terms, so I felt good about that. After another hour or so, I felt something was different, the air. All the humidity was quickly vanishing, but I had no idea why. The trees were becoming sparse and soon there were none.
