Diary Entry #3

I want to go home but the man says I can’t. He says that this is my home now. He says that I have to stay here forever. I don’t want to. I hate it here. It smells funny. It doesn’t look like my other home - the one with the big backyard. Here there’s no backyard to play in. I’m not allowed to play, anyway. When I cry the man tells me to stop.

But I can’t.

I’m sad.

I can’t stop crying.

Chapter Thirteen

February 11, Present Day

“You better have a good excuse. I’m on my third coffee. I’ll be buzzed all day. Besides that, Richard’s been blowing up my phone. He wants me to come home and relieve him because Phoebe’s a wreck. I told him if I can handle those kids all afternoon without a break after working with other people’s kids all morning, surely he can take care of them for a couple of hours. Seriously.”

Hannah sat at a small table, her back to the wall. Amy slid into the chair across from Hannah, inhaling the aromatic scent of coffee beans and pastries. “Wow. You’re pretty wired.” She grabbed the mug off the table and took a generous gulp of the lukewarm coffee.

“It’s probably not hot anymore. It’s been sitting there awhile.”

“That’s okay. You’ll never believe who showed up just as I was leaving.” Amy stripped off her scarf and jacket and slung them over the back of her chair.

“Willow?” Hannah leaned forward, elbows on the table and rested her chin in her hand. Her sleek platinum blonde hair spilled down her arm, the ends brushing the slick surface of the table.

“No, but close. She actually showed up last night.”

“She did? How is she?”

Amy shook her head. “Not so great. She’s sleeping right now.” The door swung open behind Amy and a rush of cold air swept over her back. A group of chattering women entered, their heels clicking on the floor.

Hannah’s eyes widened. “You let her spend the night? Do you think that’s wise? I mean, how much do you really know about her?”

“I know she’s in the same place I once was.”

“Well, that’s encouraging.”

“What do you mean?” The espresso machine roared to life, emitting the smell of bitter coffee beans into the air.

“Are you forgetting I knew you back then? That’s not exactly a ringing endorsement.”

Amy picked up her mug again, took another gulp. She noticed Hannah’s hands shaking. “You should probably stop drinking coffee now.”

“Good idea.” Hannah shoved her cup away.

“Amy?” A woman with cropped chestnut hair wearing yoga pants and a sweatshirt approached the table.

“Gwen? Wow, you look great.” Amy stood to embrace her. “It’s been forever since I’ve seen you.”

“I know. How have you been?” Gwen smiled, pushing her rosy cheeks up into her chocolate brown eyes.

“Great. And you?”

“Pretty good.”

Hannah cleared her throat.

“Oh, Gwen, this is my friend Hannah.” As they shook hands Amy explained the connection. “Gwen used to go to the recovery group. Hannah’s actually the one who pushed me to go in the first place.
