“Frankie!”

“What?” She snapped back into herself only to realize he’d been talking to her.

“I said, this is your sickness talking. You know that. I know that. You need to remember how to deal with it and not let it spiral. You’ve always thought this of yourself and—”

She cut him off, her panic getting wild and ragged. She grabbed his grungy work tee. He smelled of metal and heat. “But it’s not my sickness. It’s menopause. It’s weight gain. Belly weight gain. And I cannot. I cannot handle it. I’ve been so good. I work so hard. I just can’t—”

She broke off in a sob and that just pissed her off.

He stroked her hair and let her cry. They’d been together long enough for him to know his words would be lost on her right now.

Finally, when she caught her breath, “Frankie?”
