“So.”
“So.”
“On three?”
“Fuck yeah.”
“One.”
“Two.”
“Three.”
“Happy St. Patrick’s Day!” we both scream at the sky, the ocean, and every little green goblin that wishes to hear.
This year’s will be on a Tuesday, and one rule the Irish understand is that there is no better time to be wasted than the present. Ah, Ireland. You sweet, sweet fucking gem. Where do I start? The air? The people? The music? Maybe I should start with where it all began, at the airport.
Jesse has a fucking private jet. That is it. That is all of it. Everything else is more of a hazy whirlpool. Or was. Until we landed.
When we did, my lungs felt like something sinister and dark had been inside of me this whole time, and the soft siren song in the wind formed a magical hand, twirled through my nose and mouth and scraped every last bit of that poison out.
My eyes widened. My body vibrated even harder. And I felt alive for the first time since the last night we shared the stars under that weird and stuffy shed.
There was a guide for us. Tom, was it? Or was it Tommy?
The man was well built and had enough of a thick stroke of his ‘r’ that listening to him speak, even just talking about the holidays, was enough of a turn on. And I think I was lucky, considering I needed to ‘use the bathroom’ at least five times before we settled for this stretch of bars in some village. Five times to kneel on bathroom floors and caress my cervix with my vibrator until I bit my lip hard enough for it to bleed again.
I regret nothing.
And here we are, in some cottage off a black wall or rock or something and in front of us is beer and whiskey with an ‘e’ and laughs and music from the piano and the guitar and the karaoke stand and the comedy stand and the warmth and the joy and the free glasses and rhinestone slippers and green grass and fresh fucking air and stars so bright I cry and there’s no more effort in every single thing I do and—
“Don’t space out like that, Ari. It still freaks me out.”
We are outside. The grass is cool under my heavy feet. If I listen hard enough, I can hear the ocean sprays against smooth rock and infinite land. Above us, the sky twinkles and watches hauntingly, like a bird of prey ready to eat. She clunks two beer mugs together to signal me to her.
I find this rather pleasing, to be honest. She leans in on me and I do the same, backs on each other, warming our cold hearts. Hers is warmer than mine is.
“How was the wedding?”
She sighs and drinks.
“Colorful. I did not have my family there. They would not understand. But I had friends whom I’ve met along the way, people I trust. They are my family now.”
“Wish I was there.”
“Me too. You would have made an amazing singer at the banquet.
