TWELVE

The next morning Belle forced herself to wake when she heard people moving throughout the house downstairs. The night had passed in a heavy, dreamless sleep. One she wanted to return to but knew she couldn’t. By now the road would be cleared and Sheriff Riley promised to drive her to the hospital.

But then what?

She could go home, but...where was home? Still, she couldn’t remember. Her address wouldn’t be difficult to find, but it was her memories she really wanted. Would seeing a doctor even help? Doubtful, but it seemed the best course of action.

Belle drew herself into a sitting position with a wince. Every muscle in her body protested the movement. An aching soreness that stole her breath. Her ribs hurt. Her thighs hurt. Even her hair hurt. Was that possible? It must be, because her scalp burned when she ran her fingers through her curls. She delicately touched the stitches on her temple and the skin was cool. Not angry and hot. Not infected.

Reaching for the Bible on her bedside table resulted in a sharp pain in her side. Broken rib? She didn’t bother to try again. Instead, she closed her eyes and said a prayer of thankfulness. Not only for their survival, but for the glimpse into her past.

Belinda.

The name she tried to utter when Jonah first found her.

Jonah. What was happening between them? She’d only known him a few days, and yet it seemed longer. The same familiarity she had the first day lingered and now grew into something else. Connectedness. The chemistry between them was undeniable, but something more than his physical appearance drew her in. Oh, she was attracted to him. No denying it. But their friendship deepened into a closeness she didn’t want to abandon when they left Piney Village.

Could they explore their relationship in the face of the real world? His job was dangerous and required him to hide in a remote cabin for weeks, and hers...well she wasn’t sure about her own career. Jonah spent his days deceiving bad men and manipulating them until they believed whatever he told them. Could she love a man who lived a lie? And what if they got married, had kids? Would they always be in hiding?

She closed her eyes and pinched the bridge of her nose. What was she thinking? Marriage and kids?

“Get a hold of yourself,” she muttered.

One step at a time. A man’s heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps.

Was that a Bible verse she’d memorized? Another memory? She smiled at the Bible on her nightstand and decided to get out of bed and get moving. Today would be a big day.

Belle showered and dressed in the fresh clothes Stella left in the bathroom. The hot water did wonders for her stiff muscles, and she no longer worried about broken ribs. Bruised maybe, but not broken. The black-blue bruises on her neck looked worse, but they would fade in a few more days. She brushed her teeth and swallowed two ibuprofen before heading downstairs.
