Haley tried to focus on the computer screen as Ezra inserted the SD card into his laptop, but her mind wouldn’t cooperate.

What had just happened? How had a moment of comfort transitioned so quickly into a near kiss?

Or maybe that was all in her head. Maybe he hadn’t been gazing at her mouth, leaning in closer. It’d been ages since a man had kissed her—not since Xander—and she’d never had this cascade of butterflies in her stomach with him. Kissing him always felt like what couples were expected to do. Part of the deal.

But kissing somebody you just met a few days ago, while on the run for a crime you didn’t commit? Stuff like that happened in movies, not real life. Here in the real world, people had commitments they couldn’t just ignore. Hurts they couldn’t move on from at the drop of a hat. She thought of the photograph Ezra had replaced on the TV stand.

Neither of them was looking for a relationship. If anything had been about to happen, it was a moment of weakness brought on by the stress of the situation. Nothing deeper.

“Haley?” His voice broke into her thoughts, and she realized she’d missed most of what he was saying.

She cleared her throat. “What?”

“Which files?”

“All of them.” She pointed at the tiny icons on the screen. “See these? They’re pictures of plans for one of our engine prototypes. My father always keeps hard copies to be safe, locked up in a storage room attached to his office. He doesn’t digitize anything until it’s ready for production.”

“Then how did this guy get to the plans to take pictures?”

“Chris? He’s like Dad’s right-hand man, second only to me.” She still had a hard time wrapping her mind around his betrayal, even with firsthand evidence. “He’s got a key to every door in the office.”

Ezra’s eyebrows raised. “Oh. That’s a big deal. Why did he kill the guard?”

The dead man’s contorted face flashed into her mind and she grimaced. So awful. “My guess is, he asked Chris one too many questions. Maybe even wanted clearance from my father. Taking pictures of those plans in the middle of the night would look weird, even for me or Chris.”

“Okay, but why? Why steal anything if he’s practically second in charge? Seems like a pretty good gig already, if you ask me.”

Her shoulders slumped, and she dragged her hands through her hair. “My dad just announced I’d be his replacement as CEO. Some of the board members thought it was a given, but others were rooting for Chris. He’s got a brilliant head for business, more so than me.” Maybe that admission should’ve cost more, but after how hard she worked to act like she belonged in management, it felt good to admit the truth. “The science is my thing, not the business side. I always wanted to go to grad school and become a project manager for R&D, but Dad... Anyway, last year Chris and his contingent of supporters advocated
