Helen Daylex

“Exactly how far away is our ride.” Terrence sounded upset, but the way his eyes darted around made her think something else was bothering him.

Helen looked at Bri, who was working on her Digi, then back to Terrence. “I shouldn’t be telling you this.” She dropped her voice and leaned in closer. “We moved all our assets in orbit around Earth. If we had an actual security event, that’s where we’d house our assets.”

A trip to Earth in a shuttle like this would take forever.

“All the way to Earth?” Terrence gripped his armrest. “That could take days.”

Bri looked up. “Probably even longer.”

Trying not to smile as the assistant’s comment worked in her favor, Helen leaned back in her seat. “Thankfully, the ship is heading toward us for pickup.”

Terrence looked relieved. “How soon do you think it will be here?”

“You do realize we’re going to be on this trip for months. Right?” Helen tried not to laugh.

Terrence looked around the cramped shuttle. “Yes, but on a much larger ship.”

“Not that much larger.” Helen kept up the ruse. “There will be more people, too.” She moved to sit on his other side. “You work for the Confederation. How many times have you been in the black?”

“Oh, I’ve been in space. Luxury liners, private space stations, and a tour of the Confederation offices on the moon.” Terrence puffed up his chest like his resume was better than most people in his line of work.

Bri snorted. She was about to say something before she saw her boss’s face when she looked up from her Digi. Terrance rocked a frown at least a mile deep. The woman was smart. She read the room, nodded like she remembered something important, and buried her head back in whatever document she was working on. It was almost enough to make Helen giggle. One little laugh and she would be joining Bri in her sinking ship.

She kept her lips shut.

“None of those sound like deep space voyages on a smaller vessel.” She was trying to decide how big of a problem Terrence’s lack of experience would be.

If he was problematic, they might have to drug him for the duration. How in the hell would she explain her actions when they returned? Yes, we found the Zos, but we kept Terrence in a coma for six months. No worries, right? With so much money on the line, she might skate on charges, but the fallout would end her career. Much as she was enjoying the irony of his discomfort, the return journey would go smoother if they kept him awake and happy.

Terrence gritted his teeth, and his knuckles turned white against the grip of the armrest. “I’ll be fine. Bri has done this hundreds of times. She keeps telling me there is nothing to worry about.”

Bri looked up from her Digi, happy to be out of the doghouse. “Space flight is safer than traveling by plane.”

It was an old joke, and Helen couldn’t stop the laughter.

Terrence looked between the two women, trying to figure out what was so funny.
