LEADERS MODERATE OPERATIONAL SELF-ORGANIZATION

The smart leader sees the need to move “from heroic leadership in the system to wise leadership of the system” (Doppler, 2009, p. 4)—a role that intentionally contributes to the development of a self-directing organization and corresponds to the following pattern:

(1) Listen in on the system to explore the organizational energy that is fundamentally present;

(2) Provide direction, depending on the situation, as necessary to open, connect, and bundle existing energy fields;

(3) Carefully observe and analyze the effect of this direction;

(4) Give the system enough time to respond, to test itself, or to intensify its own direction or to adjust;

(5) At the same time, by means of confrontational dialog, keep “forcing” those concerned to accept the requirements to take more individual responsibility and self-direction as is required in this style of leadership and to review their own actual behavior. (ibid, p. 5)
