Chapter 5

Many paths to take

Geometry

The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new land - scapes, but in having new eyes.

In Search of Lost Time by Marcel Proust

In the last chapter I considered units that have been developed to improve accuracy and uniformity so as to standardize measurement. This continued our journey from Chapter 3, which looked at fractional parts of a whole. We now need to take measurement into two and three dimensions and focus on the shapes that children are required to learn in their maths lessons. Geometry is a visual topic and therefore in this chapter I will reflect back to some of the concepts set out in Chapter 1. You will need to open your mathematical eyes for this chapter as geometry is all about objects, shapes, their properties and relations. Let’s begin with a look at Plato, Euclid and Kepler’s geometric discoveries and then take a walk into the world of geometry.
